Horton Kirby vs FDCC 25th April 2004
|View Horton Kirby Innings| |View Ducksmen Innings|

Horton Kirby 133 for 9 (Love 45 / Mackell 3-30, Potter 2-15, Domine 2-17, Bennett 2-21)
FDCC 134 for 2 (Williams 38, Bunker 36, Robinson 34 / Drew 1-15, Love 1-17)

FDCC Won by 8 wickets

I emerged, blinking, from under the duvet. It was very warm and the sun was shining. I looked up at the clear blue sky – not a cloud to be seen. I thought to myself, who has nicked my bloody tent? I checked my watch – it had stopped, but at least it was right twice a day. I quickly realised that I had not just awoken from a sleep of epic proportions. This was April, not July, and the new cricket season is upon us. And so it was that the Flying Ducksmen XI assembled at the pleasant and friendly Horton Kirby ground for the opening match of the season. Some came by car, some by train, and some via the magical scenic route of invisible garages…
New season skipper Robin “Funky Bob” “Brian” Mackrell came second in the toss, and Horton Kirby elected to bat first. Fielding a team covering the outer limits of the age spectrum, they made a steady, if slow start. During the opening partnership of 69, the general rustiness of winter was in evidence from both sides. The batsmen played and missed a few, whilst Jon England got a few no-balls and ‘barely wides’ out of his system, but ‘Wily’ McDonald was his usual miserly self. The breakthrough came when Cap’n Mackrell, resplendent in grass-stained whites (surely not last season’s grass, Robin?), brought himself on and tempted Love to cut into the waiting, regal hands of Robinson, who held on well, despite a slight misjudgment causing blue blood to issue forth from the royal digit. His Highness retired from the field to receive attention from Royal Surgeon-General Tracey, and was replaced by sub Neal, freshly arrived astride motorbike. The wicket marked the turning point, as Horton Kirby then lost wickets steadily, as Mackrell (twice more), Potter, Bennett and Domine (after a most unusual dive during the delivery stride) accounted for the young and old of the home team, with only an 8th wicket partnership of 40 to remark upon. Horton Kirby finished on 133-9 from their 40 overs, and tea was taken, much to the obvious, but expected delight of Stewart.
The Ducksmen began their reply at much the same pace as Horton Kirby had, with steady but unspectacular progress. Bunker in particular, appeared to have mastered the dot ball, leaving Williams to try and time a few lusty blows, some of which were successful, until his stumps were re-arranged for a satisfying 38. A suitably relaxed and patched-up Robinson joined Bunker for a solid partnership of 77, during which Bunker finally found the boundary rope (to thunderous applause from almost 6 people) and Robinson stuck to his task of trying to time the pull shot. The Umpire’s supersonic finger ended Robinson’s knock, lbw for 34, and this brought Holton to the crease with just 8 needed for victory. Despite a lucky top edge, which the keeper managed to touch 4 times before dropping the chance, an attempt at a run-out and straight-ish drive which caused Bunker to adopt the prone position to avoid injury, they saw the Ducksmen home to a satisfactory 8-wicket win, with 8 overs to spare. A fine start to Mackrell’s Captaincy, and a hope that much winter rust has been eradicated from the system. Now where is my tent?

Broken trains aside, a beautiful day for a game of cricket dawned. The HSBC pitch as ever looked tremendous, outfield immaculate. We had another strong team out, with Rodney, Alex and Shaz all playing first games of the season. Toss won, batting first looked an option until the team’s resident coaches advised that the pitch might be “sweaty”. Alarmed at the prospect of simultaneously sweating pitch and batsmen, the Ducksmen scurried into the field.
Fresh from the heroics of last week, the Ducksmen fielded like demons, miserly in the extreme despite the odd full toss slipping its way into the opening few overs. The Waggoners were no match for the sheer ferocity of the fielding display and Potter was eventually out playing across the line (surely not?).Good work behind the stumps from Nelly and in the slips from Rodney accounted for 2 more and they quickly slumped to 17 for 5. Sadly, another full toss found the middle of the bat and flew like a tracer bullet to Rich W. His noble effort to catch the ball resulted in a nasty looking injury (see stories page) which led him to leave the ground in pursuit of friendly nurses to put him back together again.
Back on the pitch, Domine entered the fray and continued to look for new and interesting ways to fall over during his run up. The batsmen were by now looking to mount a recovery, but slipped to 66 for 7 with Tigger claiming 2 scalps. Good work by their numbers 7,8 and 9 allowed them a defendable total; Bunker snatched 2 wickets towards the end and they were eventually bowled out in the 39th over for 139. A reasonable total after the start they suffered.Tea was taken and Rodney and Andy strode forth to open the innings. Steady progress was made until the umpire forget that Rodney batted left handed and he was on his way. Fox of the Waggoners made an extraordinary attempt to out Wiley our own tight-fisted opener, but the figures tell the story.

However, a good start for the bowling side; Khan and Holton both flattering to deceive and leaving the Ducksmen in a potential pickle at 68-3. Fortunately, Alex had returned from picking up the injured Williams in his swanky car and was in the mood to hurry things along a bit. After a correct start, Alex made a mockery of the slow outfield and tight bowling by spanking 53 off only 36 balls including an implausible 6 picked up off a length to end the game in style. Ducksmen roll on…..
